Prenatal Breastfeeding Education: Building Confidence AND Milk Supply!
Hey Mama—You’re Having a Baby?! Let’s Talk About Feeding That Tiny Human.
First of all: congratulations! You’re growing a whole person. That’s wild, magical, and... kind of overwhelming. We’re so glad you found us, because if breastfeeding (or chestfeeding, or bottle-feeding pumped milk, or whatever your feeding journey looks like) is on your radar—we’ve got you.
Whether you’re dreaming of long nursing sessions in cozy robes or you’re just trying to make it through the first latch without crying, we’re here to help you get set up for success on your terms.
Let’s Get Real: Feeding Your Baby Is a Big Deal
While everyone’s throwing around birth plans and hospital bags, not enough people are talking about what happens after the baby is born—like, say, how you’re actually going to feed them.
Spoiler: it’s not always “natural” or “easy.”
But don’t panic—there are WAYS!
PRO TIP - Learning how newborn feeding actually works before you're sleep-deprived and leaking from places you didn't know could leak? Game-changer. Prenatal breastfeeding education is underrated. But sitting in on a class will help you feel calm, capable, and ready AF.
How To Set Yourself Up So You’re Not Googling at 2am
Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes
Think of these as your crash course in “WTH is going on with my boobs?” You need someone to walk you through what to expect, how to get started, how to avoid common pitfalls, and what to do when things get weird (because they might (will) and that’s okay).
Expect darker areola, tender tissue, and leaking colostrum weeks or months before baby arrives.
Expect feeding every 1-3 hours (anyone who says EVERY 3 hours is lying to you) and let go of a schedule or routine if you want to build up a glorious milk supply!
Expect it to take a few tries to find a latch that doesn’t make you want to punch your couch, and now that if it takes more than a day or so, your ibclc needs to be on speed-dial (“speed-dial”? Gawd I’m old) to come by and sort out what’s causing that pain ASAP
Understand milk supply, and how our odies rely on frequency more than anything else to bring in milk, and on demand feeding to regulate supply into toddlerhood.
There is so much more - register for a dedicated prenatal breastfeeding class NOW - the feeding info you get in your prenatal class might not be enough.
Feeding Support That Feels Like a Safety Net
This isn’t about doing things “right.” It’s about feeling supported. Because yes, feeding your baby is beautiful—but it can also be messy, emotional, confusing, and full of curveballs. Find your IBCLC while that kid is still hooked up to their internal IV (umbillical cord) and have them teach, and then show up when baby is just a few hours or days old. Your IBCLC’s goal should be to help you:
- Understand how milk supply actually works
- Know what’s normal and what’s not
- Handle unexpected challenges without spiraling
- And feel like you have someone in your corner (because you do)
When you work with an excellent IBCLC, you’re not just getting some knowledge wrapped up in a cheerleading pom pom—you’re getting a lifeline. Someone you can text when your baby won’t latch or your nipples are screaming. Someone who gets it and will walk you through it, step by step.
TL;DR: Prenatal BF Ed. Is for You If…
- You want to breastfeed (or think you might) and don’t know where to start
- You’ve heard horror stories and want to feel prepared
- You’re scared things might not go “as planned”
- You want support from someone who won’t guilt, shame, or boss you around
- You like feeling seen, heard, and hyped up (obviously)
